Lexington, Kentucky (CNN) -- If thoroughbred race horses are the oil of Kentucky, then Lexington is OPEC and the Keeneland Auction is its commodity exchange.

P.D. Shelton aboard Little Merada Keota

The Celebration City Classic Team Penning Event held in Shelbyville at the Clearview Horse Farm Arena this weekend provided excitement and entertainment as the horses and riders sped to sort their cows from the herd and to keep other cows from escaping the herd.

P.D. Shelton (Fayetteville, TN), organizer of the event, won the Open class along with his two other team members.

Mr. Shelton stated in a brief interview that he is hoping to spark interest and participation in team penning in the Middle Tennessee area.  He added that this is the 4th team penning event held in the area in the last two years.

The event was well- attended, was also well-organized, and just plain fun to watch. There were classes for young and old, as well as experienced and inexperienced riders.

Horse Lover staff realized that team penning resembles cutting and asked Mr. Shelton about the type of horses used. He said that most of the horses were cutting horse rejects. He added that the horses usually were rejected as cutters because they had too much speed for cutting. The horses’ speed just fits the team penning sport!

Judge Kenny Davis (Houston, Mississippi) kept the classes moving with his watchful eye on both the teams and the cows.

Mr. Davis said that this show was held as part of the Dixie Region Team Penning Association but was also sanctioned by the United States Team Penning Association (USTPA). Mr. Davis added that another team penning show in the area would be held July 23-25 in Tunica, Mississippi.
