Tim Sager showing weanling filly Saving Grace

The Spotted Saddle Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association Midseason Classic held July 23 and 24 (2010) at the Calsonic Arena displayed a great mix of patriotism and spotted ponies (as the British say). The event opened with the carrying of the flag and the National Anthem, which seems such a rare treat to hear today.

The horses were gorgeous and well-groomed and the whole atmosphere in the arena was very warm and friendly.

Horse Lover was there for the Weanling Filly class which consists of the weanlings being shown in hand.

The winner of the class, Tim Sager from Murfreesboro, TN, said that he loves to show the young horses and he likes the family friendly nature of the SSHBEA shows. Tim and wife Melissa said they usually longe their filly (Saving Grace) about an hour before the shows, stopping her to let her rest every 5 or 10 minutes for several minutes, but that with the extreme heat the day of the show, they decided not to longe her. The filly looked cool and calm in the show ring!

Yours truly and Melissa Sager talking before the show

Show Organist DeWayne Cartee

The organ music at these shows always adds to the ambiance of the gaited horse shows and organist DeWayne Cartee had the music swaying throughout the arena.

Marla Smith talking with Cleveland, TN  trainer Brandon Sutton

Walking in to the Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN during the Ranch Horse World show felt just like putting on a favorite pair of shoes---so comfortable you feel relaxed the instant you put them on your feet.  Everything about the Ranch Horse Association is very welcoming, not just to the spectators, but especially to the riders and their families.

The ARHA World Show is no exception. Seeing horses able to be natural….to walk, trot and canter in their natural gaits is such a refreshing breath of fresh air in today’s horse show world.

Even the conformation class had a little zing to it because the horses didn’t look like grossly overweight zombies and stand like statues.

Horse Lover staff was present for the 3 year old Challenge Ranch Riding and Ranch Conformation classes.

The judges of each class took their time and deliberated in what seemed to be a determined effort to give each horse and rider a fair shake at winning. The horses themselves were fit and beautiful.
All the horses looked like winners!

Cleveland, Tennessee trainer, Brandon Sutton (www.suttonranch.com), was there with a horse of his own and horses he had trained for other folks. During a brief interview, he said that he enjoys the Ranch Horse shows because they are so much fun, but that he also trains horses that compete in other quarter horse associations as well.

P.D. Shelton aboard Little Merada Keota

The Celebration City Classic Team Penning Event held in Shelbyville at the Clearview Horse Farm Arena this weekend provided excitement and entertainment as the horses and riders sped to sort their cows from the herd and to keep other cows from escaping the herd.

P.D. Shelton (Fayetteville, TN), organizer of the event, won the Open class along with his two other team members.

Mr. Shelton stated in a brief interview that he is hoping to spark interest and participation in team penning in the Middle Tennessee area.  He added that this is the 4th team penning event held in the area in the last two years.

The event was well- attended, was also well-organized, and just plain fun to watch. There were classes for young and old, as well as experienced and inexperienced riders.

Horse Lover staff realized that team penning resembles cutting and asked Mr. Shelton about the type of horses used. He said that most of the horses were cutting horse rejects. He added that the horses usually were rejected as cutters because they had too much speed for cutting. The horses’ speed just fits the team penning sport!

Judge Kenny Davis (Houston, Mississippi) kept the classes moving with his watchful eye on both the teams and the cows.
